Nearly one million people have applied for Universal Credit in just over two weeks - up from around 100,000 claims that are usually made in a fortnight.

Demand for the benefit has surged amid the coronavirus pandemic, with the nationwide lock-down forcing many people out of work or to reduce their hours. The Government has advised people, including self-employed workers, to claim Universal Credit if they are ineligible for statutory sick pay.
